Validity and Reliability

Whether you are adapting an existing portfolio or creating a new one, ensuring that it is appropriate and fair for your students is essential. This defines assessment terms used in this manual, reviews validity and reliability, and explains how these concepts are tied to instruction and assessment. It also provides guidelines for both creating a portfolio that achieves high validity and reliability and evaluating an existing portfolio for these traits. Because a portfolio is an assessment tool and a collection of assessments, reliability and validity are considered for both the individual pieces and the entire portfolio.
